Hiding behind his scraggy beard and some Formula One standard-issue aviator shades, he was not fooling anyone. ‘Jense’ is big news out here, his face having been plastered all over the back and front pages of every newspaper in Australia for the past three days. “It’s brilliant, isn’t it,” he croaked in response to a cheery thumbs-up from a passing roller-blader.
Button is in a happy place right now. After a tortuous winter waiting to see what would rise from the ashes of the former Honda F1 team, just making it to the grid in Melbourne was an achievement. To destroy the opposition and establish himself as the clear favourite for the world championship this season was beyond all expectations.

“It got very stressful,” Button said. “This has been like another first win for me because it has been so long since the last. I have had a dark time – not just this winter – last season was pretty tough. You spend a lot of time on your own and that is not good when things are not going well, I think about things too much.”
“Richard [Goddard] my manager, is a legend – and I have been through quite a few managers! My old man, my mum, and my new little lady who has been great in helping keep my mind off the bad things. They gave me a lot of love through the winter.”
“If I had this car in 2002 I might have had a chance of winning the championship, but I wouldn’t have been the complete driver that I am at 29,” he said.
“Compared to some in F1 I might seem old – compared to the guy who won last year’s world championship, for instance [Hamilton], I am five years older. But I have 10 years experience; it is the best position to be in. Fitness wise I don’t have to worry and my reactions are still good.”
“Now we just have to make sure we have the perfect weekend in Malaysia because the other guys are breathing down our necks. It won’t be a runaway victory.”
