Kamui Kobayashi Deputise For Injured Timo Glock at Abu Dhabi GP Toyota

Kamui Kobayashi will again deputise for the injured Timo Glock in the final race of the Formula One season in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

Glock remains unfit to drive for Toyota after cracking a vertebra and cutting his leg in an accident in qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix nearly four weeks ago.

Kobayashi produced an impressive debut performance in Brazil two weeks ago when he qualified 11th and finished ninth in a lively performance which saw him hold off the challenge of world champion-elect Jenson Button in his Brawn in the opening laps.

“We feel genuinely sorry for Timo that his season, which has included two impressive podium finishes, is ending in this way,” said the Toyota Motorsport president John Howett.

“Having discussed the medical advice with Timo and his management, the team has decided to take no risk and to put Kamui in the car.” The National

“Kamui performed well in Brazil in difficult circumstances so we are happy to ask him to once again deputise.”

Kobayashi added: “I am really looking forward to my second Grand Prix and I want to make the most of this unexpected chance. I didn’t know the track in Brazil and that was a little bit of a disadvantage because almost all the other drivers had some experience of it. But that’s not the case in Abu Dhabi; this is a new track for everyone so that should help me.

“I am also more familiar with the car now, as well as other procedures during a race weekend like pit stops and the two tyre compounds, so I expect to be more competitive in Abu Dhabi. I am sure the car will be strong and I will do everything I can to try to score my first points in Formula One. Of course it will be extremely difficult because the field is very strong and this is just my second Grand Prix but I will give my all.” Formula 1

Kobayashi has competed in the GP2 Series, and joined Toyota as their test driver in 2007.

He was the fourth youngest driver on the grid at Interlagos, behind Sebastien Buemi, Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastian Vettel. BBC Sport
