Ashburton driver Kerry Bartlett became the 2006/2007 Kumho Sport Saloon Series Champion at Teretonga Park near Invercargill today. Bartlett not only clinched the overall series but also took his class title and the Handicap Championship to give him a clean sweep.
Bartlett and Timaru driver Mike Small arrived at Teretonga tied on points after a three month wait for the final round but the championship was virtually decided after just 3 laps today. Small’s engine let go at the beginning of the fourth lap of the opening race of the day and he brought the Nissan Skyline to a halt, his championship aspirations over.
Bartlett continued on to second place in the first of the three races, a placing that virtually assured him of the title. He then finished fifth in the second race which wrapped up the championship and also gained him the T1 Class title for forced induction vehicles cars of 1851 - 3000cc. Then in the final race of the day, a handicap race, a last lap drive through penalty for another competitor allowed Bartlett to take the Handicap Championship with a second place.
