Former F1 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen has dropped the clearest hint yet that he will not be returning to the grand prix grid either next season or indeed ever – arguing that whilst the opportunity is there, the desire crucially isn’t.
The opportunity, ostensibly, would come from Renault, with the Enstone-based outfit understood to be eager indeed to secure World Rally Championship-convert Raikkonen’s services for F1 2011, keen to place the Finn alongside Robert Kubica – in many observers’ eyes, the star of the campaign to-date – in what would indisputably represent one of the strongest line-ups in the sport. The 30-year-old has also been at the centre of rumours of a return to grand prix racing, with Renault reportedly interested in his services.
But Raikkonen has now said that although he would have offers to return to Formula One, he believes his career in the sport is finished. SkySports
“You never know but I will probably never return to Formula One,” the 30-year-old said.
“It’s something I did for many years, I had many great moments. I won a world championship title, which is what I always wanted, but times have changed. Now I’m in rallying and there are many other things apart from Formula One in life.”
Raikkonen would like to compete in the Le Mans 24-hour race. “I would like to try but you need to find the right team,” he said. “If you want to win, there are only two, Peugeot and Audi. One day, I hope, there will be an opportunity.” Times of India
