The second round of the Koni Challenge season was held this past weekend at Homestead International Speedway. This was the first visit to the 2.3 mile track in a number of years for the Koni Challenge Series (aka Grand-Am Cup Series). Once again Gué was paired with Bret Seafuse in the #37 JBS Motorsport FR500C Ford Mustang.
For this race there was one difference that the team had to contend with, and that was the swap from Dynamic dampers to the new Koni damper. This was the first weekend that the team had a chance to work with them. After the first day of practice the JBS crew and drivers had a good understanding of what setup the damper wanted.
Bret qualified the car in the 9th position out of a 38 car field, and had a great opening stint, getting all the way up to 2nd prior to the Gué taking over the driving duties at the 1 hour 10min mark. Only 30min into Gué’s stint the rain began to fall; it rained lightly for about 35 minutes, while most opted for wet tires Gué made the call to stay out and hope to make it to the end before the heavy rains came. With 15mins to go every car on the lead lap had stopped for rains as the spray off the cars began to get worse. Gué still remained out on slicks as the rain began to fall harder. With 10mins to go Gué had about a 20 second lead, but with the rain falling harder the rest of the field began to close in. In the final 5 mins of the race Gué fell back to the 4th position.
