The LMP2 victory Saturday by Penske Motorsports Sascha Maassen and Ryan Briscoe in the Acura Sports Car Challenge of St. Petersburg marked a couple of different milestones for the Porsche factory drivers. Briscoe won for the first time in the American Le Mans Series, becoming the 120th different driver to post at least one class victory since its foundation in 1999. Maassen, a three-time class drivers champion, became the first driver in Series history to post at least one win in all nine of its seasons to date.
Briscoe and Maassen drove their Porsche RS Spyder to a 0.116-second victory over teammates Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhard. They also finished third overall behind two diesel-powered Audi R10 TDIs. The outcome looked in doubt early after engineers believed the car to be overheating and a stop-and-go penalty following contact with Marino Franchitti s Acura.
