Ferrari chief Luca di Montezemolo has admitted that the team are considering ditching Kimi Raikkonen for next season.
Former world champion Fernando Alonso has been linked with a move from Renault to Italians for 2010 and Di Montezemolo revealed he was taking his time to find the best candidate.
Raikkonen is by far the best-paid driver in Formula One, commanding a £25million annual salary, and has a contract till the end of next season.
But the Ferrari president is only prepared to guarantee a drive next season for Felipe Massa, who is on the road to recovery after almost losing his life when knocked unconcious at the wheel during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix in July. Daily Mail
“We will have a Brazilian driver because he deserves another chance given that, thank God, he is fine,” said Montezemolo.
“Otherwise, we are mulling the best choice but we still have time. We will decide in a few weeks.”
Ferrari has previously confirmed that Raikkonen is contracted until 2010 but have never actually verified that the 29-year-old will drive for them next year.
The Finn, who won the 2007 drivers’ title with Ferrari but this season stands fifth with four races to go, has been linked in the media with former team McLaren and current championship leaders Brawn. SkySports
