Improvements for Jarno Trulli, Timo Glock and Sebastian Vettel saw them finish up fourth, fifth and sixth, with Kimi Raikkonen - the man who sat perched at the helm of the standings with four minutes remaining on the clock - seventh.
Brawn GP’s Jenson Button, who won the season-opening race in Australia last weekend, could only clock 1:36.541 for tenth place.
The Briton was a place behind teammate Rubens Barrchello, who will start Sunday’s race with a five-place grid penalty after changing his gearbox.
World champion Lewis Hamilton was 12th fastest, a day after apologising for lying over the Trulli incident in Melbourne last weekend that led McLaren to suspend sporting director Dabe Ryan and send him home.
