With seven races of the Formula One season remaining, world championship leader Mark Webber insists that any title talk is premature.
The Red Bull driver took a four-point lead over Lewis Hamilton in the drivers’ standings following his victory in last weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix, but the tight tussle that has developed this season means that Webber’s team-mate Sebastian Vettel, world champion Jenson Button and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso all stand within 20 points of the Australian.
As many as 175 points remain on offer and given the twists and turns seen so far this season, Webber is refusing to look too far ahead.
“We are way too far out for that,” the 33-year-old, who was tipped for the title by his former manager Flavio Briatore this week, told the Sydney Morning Herald. SkySports
“We’ve got a lot of people that can win races at this level and we have already seen that. The most important thing for me is the next race. That’s a bit boring, it’s an old cliche, but that’s what it is.”
“It’s unrealistic to think I’m going to win the next seven.”
Although it seems hard to imagine anything but a Red Bull dominant second half as the Milton Keynes based outfit are almost a second ahead of their nearest rivals, Ferrari, who are a further half second ahead of McLaren.
“You have got to get everything right in order to do that and the team have worked incredibly hard to get the car to where it is and obviously I’m pretty happy with my driving.” The F1 Times
“We’ve shown this year that the car is performing on all tracks so we hope we don’t have any weak circuits,” he told Red Bull’s official website. “Singapore should be good, Suzuka, Brazil and Abu Dhabi. We’re a little bit worried about how the long straights might go at some of the other venues, at Monza maybe. But the car is very, very strong at most tracks so we’re ready to take on anyone at any venue.”
With such confidence in his car, Webber is hopeful he can add a few other blue-ribbon events to his tally of victories this year, which already includes wins in Monaco and Silverstone.
“It would be nice to win Spa, Suzuka and a few other victories, and along with that hopefully comes something special,” he said. “I have a few of my goals already in the pocket this year, which is sensational , but we have some great races coming up in the future - some real signature events which would be great to win.” Formula 1
