Felipe Massa returned to the race track for the first time publicly in Brazil yesterday.

The Brazilian ace drove a few laps at a kart circuit in his native Sao Paulo wearing his red Ferrari overalls.

The 28-year-old has been recovering since fracturing his skull in an accident at the Hungarian Grand Prix on July 25.

Massa has said he wants to race again this season, either in one of the two races after Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix.

The first is his home event and it is followed a fortnight later by the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi. Mirror.co.uk

Any comeback will depend on being given the all-clear by doctors.

Massa, 28, drove at the Grana Viana karting track on the outskirts of Sao Paulo on Monday and is planning to do more running this week.

The test was attended by his personal doctor Dino Altmann, who had recommended he drove for no more than an hour.

The source said Massa felt “very good”.

“He was in very good condition and he said to the doctor he was feeling OK. There were no complaints.

“He had been a bit worried about the pressure of his helmet on the part of his head where he suffered the fracture, but it was OK.

“He would like to be back for the last race (in Abu Dhabi on 1 November) but that depends on further tests with the FIA doctor.”

Massa’s team-mate at Ferrari next year will be Fernando Alonso, whose switch to the team is expected to be announced in Japan this weekend.

As part of his preparations for an F1 return, Massa will race in the International Challenge of the Stars event Massa in the Brazilian city of Florianopolis, which features drivers from different motorsport categories including F1, Indy racing and stock cars.

Seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher and Barrichello are also expected to take part. BBC Sports
