Felipe Massa set the pace as Formula One teams returned to the test track for the first time since the start of the season.
The Brazilian finished with a top lap of 1:18.339, which was almost three seconds faster than Honda test driver Alexander Wurz.
Pedro de la Rosa in the McLaren-Mercedes was third quickest as the top three drivers set their times using slick tires.
BMW-Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld set the fourth fastest time. He was one of two drivers who did not elect to try the new slick tires on Monday.
Force India test driver Vitantonio Liuzzi rounded out the nine driver field with the slowest time of the day, more than four seconds off the pace.
