Formula One driver Felipe Massa will travel to the United States on Friday to undergo tests with a doctor renowned for treating injured race car drivers.
Massa, recovering from life-threatening injuries from a crash in his Ferrari at the Hungarian Grand Prix nearly a month ago, said Sunday he will go to Miami to meet Dr. Steve Olvey, a former medical director for CART and a specialist in racing injuries.
Before traveling, Massa will undergo more exams in Brazil to check on his progress after sustaining multiple skull fractures in the high-speed crash in qualifying for the Hungarian GP on July 25.
The 28-year-old Massa also thanked fellow Brazilian Barrichello for dedicating his victory at the European GP on Sunday to him. Barrichello wore a helmet with the words: “Felipe, see you on the track soon.” The Associated Press
Rubens Barrichello has urged Brazilian countryman Felipe Massa not to rush his recovery from a life-threatening injury to return to Formula One racing.
“From a friend’s point of view, he is ready to race. He has some stitches on his head, but he is ready to race. But from a medical point of view I think he has to stay calm and wait for that answer,” Barrichello said as he prepared for the European Grand Prix.
“I would not hurry up to get back. He has a safe place at Ferrari, and in the same way I wanted to see him as the same Felipe, I want to see the same Felipe driving when he comes back,” said Barrichello, who added that Massa’s memory did not appear affected by the accident that had left a visible scar around his left eye.
