McLaren principal Martin Whitmarsh insists there is no hierarchy between the team’s drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.
Whitmarsh is convinced either man can win the world title, even if the British duo should find themselves in a championship tussle with, for argument’s sake, Michael Schumacher at Mercedes.
Whitmarsh, though, believes McLaren were right to sign Button as Hamilton’s team-mate, with both to be given a fair and equal crack of the whip, and that there will be no in-fighting.
“We have a philosophy that has been maintained for a long time even before I joined this team, which is to get the best drivers we can to drive the team on,” remarked Whitmarsh.
“I think we’ve two drivers who are very honest and very open. They both want to beat each other - I’d be worried if they didn’t.”
“But I think it’s going to be clean, going to be open and it’s going to be co-operative.”
“Inevitably, if they are nip and tuck, and they are taking points from one another, if you’re fighting a one-man team, then it does become difficult.”
“But they are really super personalities, terrific assets, you can sense it.”
