This is an update to Montreal May Be Able To Retain The 2009 F1 Grand Prix
The Montreal government is refusing to give up on seeing the Canadian GP returned to the F1 calendar for 2009.
Earlier this week it was announced that the grand prix had been dropped, reportedly due to non-payment of monies owed to F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.
But Montreal mayor Gerald Tremblay has revealed he may increase hotel taxes over the grand prix weekend in a bid to raise several million pounds and said: “We need to know if we’re going to have a grand prix in 2009. We’re trying to find a proposal that will meet with the approval of Bernie Ecclestone and his board of directors.”
“(Ecclestone’s) not interested in where the money’s going to come from, he just wants to get the money to which he thinks he’s entitled.”
Quebec’s hotel industry is willing to do its part to help save the Canadian Grand Prix Formula One race.
According to La Presse, Quebec, Ottawa and Montreal hoteliers have endorsed a proposal which would see the hotel tax increase to four percent, a rise of one percent from the current rate.
