SCCA Pro Racing SIRIUS Satellite Radio Mazda MX-5 Cup driver, Brett Smrz, of Coeur d’Alene, Id., underwent surgery to amputate the lower portion of his left leg Saturday, following an injury sustained while jumping on a trampoline.
The break was severe enough to sever the main artery and nerve to the 16-year-old’s left foot and after 20 hours in surgery, the doctors determined the leg required amputation in order to save the young racer’s life. On Saturday, May 5, doctors successfully removed a section of Smrz’ left leg, up to his knee. He will require several more surgeries this week, but is reported to be stable and in good spirits.
