Formula One driver Nico Rosberg came out and said it plainly: He should have been declared winner of Singapore’s first Formula One race last year, after Renault cheated.
The Williams man who finished second behind Renault’s Fernando Alonso said that in the wake of the ‘Crashgate’ scandal, driver Nelson Piquet Jr who crashed his car deliberately should not have been let off without any punishment.
“Renault cheated. In the end they should have been disqualified…and I would have won the race,” Rosberg said.
But he is unlikely to get his wish. International Automobile Federation (FIA) rules stipulate that after Nov 30, results for that year cannot be changed. Straits Times
Rosberg, 24, said: “Actually, I won the race because the team who finished first cheated. Now it’s the big Renault scandal. If we had protested, I could’ve won the race last year. But it’s too late now.”
“It’s a pity for the sport that something like that has happened. The people responsible have been kicked out.
“The only thing I don’t understand is that Piquet didn’t get anything. For me, he’s just as involved as the others because he is the one who actually did it and agreed to it.”
“There’s a lot involved, a lot of money, a lot of expectations, a lot of sponsors, big names, big people, and everybody is trying to get the best out of it. And that is how you get into these problematic situations. There’s always problems in sports, because there’s so much involved. Even football, even with the problems of Chelsea. It’s everywhere. People try to use the grey areas and sometimes it goes wrong.” Telegraph.co.uk
