Nelson Piquet Jr. is still boiling about his dismissal from Renault, aiming his vitriol at team boss Flavio Briatore.
Piquet, who labelled Briatore as an “executioner” when he was axed following the Hungarian Grand Prix, said the flamboyant Italian was “ignorant” when it comes Formula One.
“He didn’t understand what is going on with the team,” Piquet said in an interview.
“If you listen to the pit-wall radio, it’s like a joke. He hasn’t got a clue what is happening in the race.”
“It’s like listening to something my sister would say about the car.”
Piquet added that the only benefit Briatore brings to Renault is his relationship with F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone and the governing body, FIA. TSN.ca
“Nobody has a friendship with Flavio – there’s no relationship. It’s only business,” said Piquet.
“He is ignorant about F1. Maybe because all the things that didn’t favour me put me so low that he just didn’t care,” he continued.
“Sometimes he asks whether a driver is on slick or wet tyres when it is obvious.”
“Everyone knows that his ego is bigger than anything else. He likes to show off.”
“You can be a very good businessman, but the F1 team itself can do very well without him.”
“When I first started he would attend all the meetings and briefings, but taking away the business side, he makes comments that don’t make sense.” InTheNews.co.uk
It was the second time Piquet Jr. had spoken out against Briatore since being let go from Renault after failing to achieve a significant result this season.
“A manager, in his view, is someone who takes 20 percent from the drivers’ money,” Piquet Jr. said. “In our view, it would be someone trying their best for a good contract.”
Piquet Jr., son of three-time world champion Nelson Piquet, said Briatore remains his manager because of contractual obligations, but wasn’t hopeful of getting any help from him finding another team in 2010. USA Today
