Returning formula one legend Michael Schumacher said he was as keen as anyone to see how Australian Mark Webber’s Red Bull team has shaped up for this season after they skipped the opening pre-season test in Spain.
In a pre-recorded interview that was shown at the launch for next month’s Australian Grand Prix yesterday, Schumacher said it was too hard to pinpoint who would be the force this year.
‘‘Yes, you have the top teams out front for sure,’’ the seven-time world champion said. ‘‘But who is the one? We’re still missing Red Bull which everyone including us expects a good performance from.’’ The Age
He told the crowd he could not resist the chance to become the first German driver to win a world championship in a Mercedes.
“It’s a new challenge and a new experience for me this year, but knowing Ross (Brawn, Mercedes GP boss) so well and working with him again has made it very easy for me and I feel at home in the team already,” he said.
The prospect of Webber and Schumacher on the podium was a “mouth-watering” one, Australian Grand Prix chief executive Drew Ward said.
“The scene is perfectly set for a great showdown with four world champions and the homegrown Mark Webber,” he said at the launch.
