It just keeps getting better and better. The inaugural Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the season finale, will not just feature the pinnacle of motorsport. The GP weekend will have three support races, in what promises to be an action packed weekend for motorsport fans from UAE and around the world.
Apart from seeing the likes of world champions Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton, championship contender Jenson Button, fans would be able to get a glimpse of those knocking on the doors of F1—like Bruno Senna, nephew of F1 legend Ayrton Senna, at the impressive Yas Marina Circuit at Yas Island.
The GP weekend will feature three of the world’s foremost racing series—the GP2 Asia Series, the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup and the Chevrolet Supercars Middle East Challenge.
Bruno Senna, runner-up of the 2008 GP2 main series and former Porsche Mobil1 Supercup driver and Lumina CSV Middle East Champion Tarek Elgammal were also present during the announcement.
“Be on the journey with us. This is a series of meetings aimed at building confidence, building what we can achieve. Each of these events are equally important to establish a credibility. We are delighted to have the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup, GP2 Asia Series and Chevrolet Supercars Middle East Challenge included on the race schedule for the Formula One weekend. This is a world-class line up to have at our inaugural Grand Prix,” Cregan added. Khaleej Times
Established only last season, the GP2 Asia Series is an ideal stepping stone for aspiring F1 drivers. No wonder then that Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Timo Glock have all passed through the portals of GP2 driving when the series was first launched in Europe in 2005.
“GP2 drivers are normally known to trying out optimistic moves on the circuit, so some of the safety features of the track are sure to be tried out,” noted Bruno Senna, runner-up of the 2008 GP2 main series.
The 25-year-old, who drove around the Yas Marina Circuit with Chevrolet Supercars Middle East Challenge driver Tarek Elgammal on Tuesday to get a feel of the track, was unruffled at what lay ahead for the opening races. “There is no prior data for the teams and drivers to use so expect all the excitement and some unexpected results over the weekend,” added Senna, nephew of the legendary Ayrton Senna.
