There was no hiding the delight on Sebastian Vettel’s face after qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix on Saturday.
The German claimed his first ever pole position in tricky and wet conditions, and declared it another dream come true afterwards while speaking in Monza.
Sebastian Vettel of Toro Rosso will become the youngest Formula One driver to start from the pole position after setting the fastest qualifying session Saturday for the Italian Grand Prix.
The 21-year-old German driver took advantage of the rain-drenched Monza circuit to earn the first pole for him and the team. McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen took second and Red Bull’s Mark Webber came third.
“It is just fantastic that this has happened. I can’t believe it myself. Before the session, I said that with all the rain I could go for the pole and I was only joking.
“I really did not expect it and it is amazing. This is a dream come true. It is such a great day for us and for the team,” said Vettel, touted as the heir to compatriot Michael Schumacher.
“We have made such huge progress in the last couple of years. But there was so much water out there and at the Ascari chicane it was just so difficult not to go off.”
Questioned about the conditions which caught out Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen among others, Vettel argued that there was “no secret” behind his success.
“We did the best we could, running and simply getting used to the conditions. There was no secret.
“In the second qualifying it was very difficult, I set my time quite early. I was lucky to get a clean lap, but towards the end of the segment there was more and more rain so the people waiting to go out had a bit of bad luck.
