BMW’s Robert Kubica believes he can beat Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa to this season’s formula one drivers’ title.
The Polish driver, who finished second in Japanese grand prix, is only 12 points behind Hamilton and seven behind Massa with a maximum of 20 points available in the remaining two grands prix. Kubica’s podium earned him eight points, while Massa picked up two and Hamilton none.
The 23-year-old likened his situation to that faced by Kimi Raikkonen last year, the Finn on that occasion overhauling a 17-point deficit across the final two races to defeat Hamilton and become World Champion.
“There’s nothing to lose. Kimi showed last year that anything is possible. It’s a good boost - we’re still in the fight,” said Kubica, who led the Drivers’ Championship after winning the Canadian Grand Prix in June.
“If you’ve led the Championship after seven races you should be fighting for the title.
“You at least have to try,” said Kubica. “If you’ve led the championship after seven races you should be fighting for the title.
“I have two guys in front of me and at normal pace it’s no secret that we are not as fast as Massa and Hamilton, so life is a bit more difficult but it could still happen.
“In Monza we had changeable conditions. I started 11th and finished on the podium. In the last race in Singapore my race was ruined by safety cars so you never know.”
