Vettel Beats Button to Claim Turkish GP Pole

Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel claimed pole position for the Turkish grand Prix ahead of Brawn GP’s Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello in this afternoon’s qualifying session at Istanbul Park.

The 21-year-old German driver left it until the final lap to post his fastest time of 1min 28.316secs and denied Button a hat-trick of starts from the front of the grid. guardian.co.uk

Vettel clocked a best time of 1minute 28.316 seconds to beat Button of Brawn by one-tenth of a second after the Englishman appeared to have taken pole ahead of Brawn team-mate Brazilian Rubens Barrichello.

Barrichello ended up third on the grid for Sunday’s 58 laps race around the Istanbul Park circuit where in the last five years every pole-sitting driver has gone on to claim victory.

Australian Mark Webber was fourth for Red Bull, Italian Jarno Trulli took fifth for Toyota ahead of Finn Kimi Raikkonen and his Ferrari team-mate Brazilian Felipe Massa.

Two times world champion Spaniard Fernando Alonso of Renault was eighth, German Nico Rosberg of Williams ninth and Pole Robert Kubica of BMW Sauber 10th. AFP

“We will try our best to keep this statistic alive but it won’t be easy,” Vettel said. “We have a very good chance here, a very good car.

“I expected more difficulties in qualifying but we made it. This is just half way and the main task for us comes tomorrow, it is a long race, very tough, it won’t be an easy one, it will be exciting, so let’s see.

“In Friday practice we had an engine failure so I was not able to do a lot of laps but I had a good feeling for the car so I was quite confident.

“It was a surprise to be quickest in all sessions. Finally we made it. In the last couple of races we tried hard and finally we are ahead of these white guys (Brawn). Everything is positive so we will see tomorrow.” Planet F-1.com
