Brazilian Felipe Massa of Ferrari was receiving medical attention here Saturday after crashing heavily in qualifying for Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix.
The 28-year-old - winner of 11 Grand Prix - went off the track at Turn Four at more than 200 kph after being struck by a piece of debris that had flown off the rear of compatriot Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn GP suspension.
Massa was hit on the face, close to his chin, and momentarily concussed as his car skewed off the circuit and into the barriers. AFP
Massa appeared to regain control of the car just before the crash at turn No. 4 as his front brakes were locked upon the violent impact.
The 28-year-old Massa stayed in the car for a considerable time and it was unclear whether he required assistance in getting out, before he was taken away on a stretcher.
The front of his Ferrari was shredded, with both tires having come off and the front nose open. The Associated Press
