It was Hamilton’s first serious driving for three weeks thanks to the mid-season break after the Hungarian Grand Prix – a period where he has been enjoying some serious rest and relaxation with his girlfriend, Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger.

But over the last few weeks, the early hours of the morning have not just been spent partying – Hamilton has also been tuning into events in Beijing to whet his appetite for the second half of the season.
“Watching the people at the Olympics has been an absolute inspiration,” he said. “When you see people who are not professionals giving everything and training as hard as they can, they are just so hungry for victory. I can really extract quite a lot from that.”
“It would be great if we could have the success of the Olympics, the football team could start well in the World Cup qualifiers and then we have the Formula One world champion as well. It would be fantastic for the country.”
“I am just working hard to fulfil my end of the bargain.”
