“We’re good but not as good as everyone thinks we are” - Jenson Button

Brawn GP

Jenson Button has declared that his team Brawn are not as invincible as they are painted, despite winning three of the season’s four races to lead the formula one world championship by 12 points going into this weekend’s Spanish grand prix.

“We’re good – but we’re not as good as everyone thinks we are,” said Button. “Low-speed corners are our strong point but the Red Bulls have been superior everywhere with high-speed corners and there are plenty of those here. You’re always worried that people are going to catch up because, this season, things are changing dramatically.

“I think McLaren were very strong in Bahrain – they weren’t far off us at all. They have been improving at every race. This is a very important weekend – we’ve got a new package here but we won’t be adding much after this race. This package has to give us a good lump in lap time. We have to hope it will put us in front of the Red Bulls by a small margin.” Guardian.co.uk

Series leader Button remains cautiously optimistic. “I visited the factory last week to join the team for a small celebration of our successes to date and catch up on the progress with our latest developments. We know that we have a real fight on our hands to maintain our lead in the championships but I am confident that we are well prepared.”

The only team without a major aerodynamic update are McLaren, but only because they are the only one to have incorporated upgrades at each of the four races so far. Lewis Hamilton yesterday praised the progress they have made. “When we tested here we felt we would not be too bad, but when we tested we were two and a half to three seconds behind the leading car so that was a big shock,” he said. “The team has pushed an incredible amount from then. The progress the team has seen since the first and second days here has been phenomenal, but there is still a long way to go.” Independent

However, despite his early advantage Button - who finished sixth last year in Barcelona for Brawn’s predecessor Honda - is not taking anything for granted.

“We don’t have enough of a lead yet to think about the championship,” said the 29-year-old.

“It is a little bit frustrating when you’ve won three races to only have a 12-point lead but for now we need to concentrate on this weekend.”

“I don’t think any team would honestly be thinking about the championship after just four races.”

Button and Brawn will be once again targeting the top step of the podium at the Circuit de Catalunya, but will keep a close eye on the chasing pack.

Team principal Ross Brawn will also provide both Button and his team-mate Rubens Barrichello with a series of upgrades, including new sidepods and an updated version of the controversial double-decker diffuser. BBC Sport
