Mexico racing official Jose Abed is hopeful that his homeland will be added to the Formula 1 world championship calendar in 2010.
Abed, an FIA vice-president, has claimed that F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone has the go-ahead to add two new races to an expanded calendar. And if such a move goes ahead, he is keen for Mexico to be involved and says the government will back a campaign.
The Central American country has hosted races in the past, some time ago, but fell out of favour and hasn’t seen the F1 circus for some time. They host major events like A1GP and WTCC but their circuits are not quite up to F1 standards.
“Those changes will be made by 2010 and, if it happens, Mexico will have to work hard to have a proper track,” Abed said.
“Even so, we must wait for Bernie Ecclestone’s decision to include Mexico.”
