Most of Joey Herques’ classmates are going to spend their time off of school doing typical summertime activities such as baseball, swimming and vacationing.
Herques and five other members of Joey Herques Motorsports, Inc. left for Charlotte on May 29, where they are participating in the Speedway Legends Driver Development program.
Eric Picou, manager of JHM. Inc., said NASCAR driver David Ragan picked Herques to participate in the program, and the entire five-man operation at JHM, Inc. is relocating to Charlotte for the summer.
“It was out of 31 drivers from across the country,” Picou said. “It was (based) off of personality, attitude and race accomplishments. It’s a very, very prestigious thing to achieve.”
Herques started racing go-karts at 6-years old, and about six months ago, switched to racing Legends Cars.
And one day in the future, Herques hopes to be one of the drivers on television.
“My dream is to be in NASCAR,” he said. “Kids want to be in the NFL or MLB. I always wanted to be in NASCAR. It’s a thing that I’ve always liked to do. I mean, my first word was car.”
In the Legends Car, Herques and his racing team have been to North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.
It might seem like a lot for a 14 year old. But Herques considers racing more than a hobby.
