He is not yet old enough to drive and he’s nursing broken bones but Andy Lawson is about to take on some of motorsport’s quickest men.
The Brookfield 16-year-old young gun has been granted wildcard entry into the Australian MotoGP at Phillip Island in October, and not even a broken wrist suffered at 125cc national championship race two weeks ago is going to stop him.
‘‘When I was coming out of the corner a freak storm hit the tarmac and I lost the back and got flung over the handle bars,’’ he said.
‘‘I’m definitely riding (at the GP) and I might even do the testing the week before, which will be difficult but hopefully I’ll be right,’’ he said.
Another hurdle for the apprentice refrigeration mechanic is his equipment, which isn’t as advanced as that of his competitors.
‘‘It’s going to be difficult because they’ve got very expensive machinery that goes over 240km/h and mine struggles to push 230, and that’s a big difference in 125cc races,’’ Lawson said.
