When Kim White was a teenager and worked at his father’s body shop, one of his co-workers suggested building a race car for White to drive.
It took almost 40 years — and a lot of money — for White’s childhood fantasy to come true.
A self-described racing fan, the 56-year-old owner of White’s Collision Repair recently finished his first full season in the Great American Stockcar Series.
A requirement of the series is that the drivers be 45 years old or older.
Last year, Rich Hayward, a Ford dealer in Dallas, invited White to come to Portland International Raceway to watch a friend drive a stock car.
The person’s father fell ill and White was in the right spot.
“They told me I could get in the car and it didn’t cost me a dime,” White said. “I drove all day. We had a race at the end of the day that I ran in.
