When Charlie Sheen decided to join Twitter this week, he managed to break the 1,000,000 follower mark in less than 24 hours, and some companies decided to seize the opportunity for self gain.
Take Ford for example, which as TechCrunch points out, cleverly decided to “promote” a tweet about the Rally America Web series about the 2012 Ford Focus – but the promoted tweet grabbed attention not for its content, but for what topic it was promoted to – “#Winning.” Why? Because Charlie Sheen has instantly made the saying “Winning” famous by applying it to virtually anything positive going on, particularly in his Tweets.
As a result, companies like Ford, Arbys, Audi and AMC Theaters all paid something in the ballpark of $100,000 in order to have a sponsored tweet appear whenever anyone searched for “#Winning” on the social network
