Innovation in American auto racing and the behind-the-scenes culture of the sport will be the focus of a new $15 million permanent exhibit at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, organizers announced Thursday.
Fundraising is under way for “Racing in America,” which is expected to open in about two or three years. Patricia Mooradian, president of The Henry Ford historical center, said an aim is to highlight racing’s teamwork and spirit.
The 22,000-square-foot exhibit will offer an overview of American racing history and achievements, and feature a number of historical cars. Drag racing, road racing, stock cars, Indy cars and land-speed record cars all will be represented.
The exhibit also will showcase technology, math and science in auto racing, and interactive displays will include a “broadcast booth” where visitors can announce famous races.
Current displays of the museum’s extensive car collection include the “Automobile in American Life,” which examines the auto’s influence on the 20th century.
