Kameron Mills has been racing toward her dreams since she was 6 years old.
If the Independence High School sophomore has her way, she will be tearing up the tracks at NASCAR races alongside the likes of Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon.
Although she is not yet old enough to take her driver’s test, the 15-year-old recently traveled to Hudson, N.C., where she test drove a NASCAR limited late model race car.
That is a big jump for Mills, who has progressed from go-carts to half-scale cars and to, most recently, a two-thirds NASCAR stock car.
Kameron’s dad David, who serves as her one-man pit crew, said she tested the car at the request of its owner Ed Cox, who operates Orion Motorsports in Statesville, N.C.
Kameron’s performance was impressive enough that Cox has invited her to spend next summer with him and his wife, working at the shop during the week and racing during the weekend.
“That way she’ll get a real good knowledge on what goes into it (racing),” David said.
“I know it can happen,” she said of her NASCAR dreams. “I’m going to put the time in to do it and I’m confident in myself that I can.
“I’m positive it’s going to happen.”
