Your average car can go about 300 miles on one tank of gas. How would you like to have a vehicle that could go the same distance off one gallon of fuel.
That may sound too good to be true, but some local high school students are making it happen. The car was made by a group of about 20 high school students for a competition called the Supermileage Challenge. The goal is to design and build cars that are energy efficient. Out of the whole state, Aurora High School took the prize.
The car isn’t designed for comfort, but it’s able to go almost 400 miles on one tank of gas. Senior Jake Jenkins explained why. “There’s less turbulence and air friction on it because it’s smooth. We had to use geometry and stuff too.” Jenkins said the car uses less gas because of its design. Students created the Red Bullet in a tear drop shape to minimize the amount of wind turbulence.
Aurora High School got 1st and 2nd place at this year’s state Supermileage Competition. They’re already thinking about next year. Students say they want to try designing a type of Hybrid Car that doesn’t run on gas.
