The identity of Top Gear’s test driver has long been debated. It is one of the most popular internet search questions.
Schumacher’s appearance on the show was more than likely a stunt to mark the first episode of the new BBC Two series.
Following a bad drive by former Formula One world champion Schumacher at the end of the show, host Jeremy Clarkson told viewers: “I don’t think Michael Schumacher is the Stig.” So the question remains.
The first Stig was stunt driver Perry McCarthy.
Known as The Black Stig, he always wore a black suit and helmet before he was “killed off” during the third series in 2003 after revealing his identity. He was subsequently replaced with the new White Stig.
Earlier this year it was claimed the mystery driver was professional stuntman and Le Mans racer Ben Collins. Telegraph.co.uk
The 40-year-old German driver - who won the Formula One driver’s championship seven times before retiring in 2006 - was then interviewed by Clarkson, who asked him: “What’s your real name? It’s just too amazing for words!”
He also quizzed Schumacher about some of the rumours which surround the Stig, asking: “Are you illegal in 17 US states?”
The driver replied: “No, it’s much exaggerated. It’s only nine.”
But the dramatic “unveiling” is though to have been a hoax, with many believing the white overalls and helmet are shared by several drivers. Ireland Online
