Justin Wilson discovered the game of basketball on Wednesday, and judging by the results, he will stick to the IndyCar Series.
Wilson traded in his steering wheel for a basketball on Wednesday and took part in a game of I-N-D-Y-C-A-R against Donte Greene, a forward with the NBA’s Sacramento Kings.
The 6-foot-11 Greene easily handled Wilson in the fun-filled game. Both athletes had a great time just outside Arco Arena, home of the Kings, as Wilson prepares for this weekend’s Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon Raceway (Aug. 21-23). Wilson is the tallest driver in IndyCar at 6-3.
“Once I knew I was doing this I went down to my local gym and shot some hoops; I knew it was going to be pretty bad,” said Wilson, who drives for Dale Coyne Racing and sits 10th in the standings. “I’ve never played a game of basketball before. I’ve shot some hoops but never a full game.”
Greene said the game was all in good fun. The duo played a variation of H-O-R-S-E, only using the word IndyCar. Wilson only managed to tag Greene with an I-N.
“To be fair, Justin did fairly well for someone who hasn’t played the game,” Greene said. “Obviously, racing is his game.”
After basketball, Greene and Wilson hopped on a simulator provided by IRacing.com and drove IndyCars around Infineon Raceway. This was more to Wilson’s liking as he toured the circuit in 1 minute, 23 seconds. Greene was a tad slower at 1:54.
“I’d love to go to the track some time and get in an IndyCar, if they can find one that fits me,” Greene quipped. “I had a great time with Justin.”
