Tom and Mike Sires drive thousands of miles during the week to make a living. Then they strap into race cars for a frenetic Friday night drive at Black Hills Speedway.
During their day jobs, working for their Rapid City-based Sires Trucking, they haul cattle for a meat-packing house in Green Bay. On Friday, Tom drives his No. 27s in the Midwest Modified division at BHS, while Mike is learning the ropes in his No. 7 in the 360 Sprint class. Mike has also subbed behind the wheel of Tom’s modified.
Tom has a decade of experience behind him starting out in the Wissota Super Stock class, then progressing to the Wissota Late Model division after a couple of seasons.
“It’s a pretty competitive class,” Sires said of the modifieds. “But it’s a lot more fun racing 28 cars instead of five.”
Last Saturday night, Tom added a fourth in the modified feature at Huron’s Dakota State Fair Speedway.
Tom’s stated goal is to continue to have fun and finish out the season. That may not seem to be much of a benchmark, but running an entire schedule proved to be difficult in the high-dollar late model division.
So the brothers will continue to drive for a living and also drive race cars as a diversion from work.
“We don’t fish. We don’t camp. We don’t have boats. If you’re going to do something, you might as well do what you want to do and have fun,” Tom Sires said.
