Months before the birth of his first grandson,Vince Polidori started acting the part of a proud grandpapa.
When his daughter,Sandra De Dominicisannounced she was pregnant and expecting a boy, Vince immediately started gathering materials for something very special.
“I don’t have much to give,” says Vince, “but I have mechanical knowledge.”
A 58-year-old tool-and-die maker, Vince has worked with steel all his life so he started gathering recycled materials for a little boy’s dream—a super go-kart that will last through most of Stefen’s childhood.
“Years ago, I had a neighbour—John De Dominicis—who was an Electrolux dealer and dreamed of building an electric go-kart. He said it would be almost noiseless and with no smell. It turned out John’s nephew David married my daughter and I thought it would be a tribute to him to build that kind of go-kart.”
“It really was a labour of love,” says Sandra, who has ridden in the machine and occasionally got stuck there.
These days grandpapa and grandson are practising go-karting skills together.
Vince is collecting additional parts for the super cart—he’s built it to last and some of the recycled systems are hard to come by—and there’s a pretty compelling reason to keep working.
