Most of Kelly Wisdom’s yard is car purgatory. Each car waits, lifeless, for a rejuvenation of its soul.
But in the land of the living are several jewels, a sunny yellow 1951 Chevrolet pickup, a gray 1950 Dodge Wayfarer with less than 60,000 miles and three rare mid-1980s extended-cab conversion GMC and Chevrolet trucks.
“Sometimes I’ll have people call me up and say, I’ve got a car sitting in my yard, if you’ll come get it, you can have it,’” he laughed.
And many have found their way to Kelly’s yard that way. Some have some sentimental value. Kelly’s wife Amy, whom he describes as his “partner-in-crime” still has the truck she had in high school. The only difference is that now the 1981 Chevrolet Scottsdale C20, which formerly had a 350 horsepower engine, is sporting a 500 horsepower engine.
“This is her baby. We’d probably sell the house before we sold this truck,” he said.
The list of cars Kelly has restored is long and really, Kelly said, he can’t even count or remember how many. A lot of love and sweat goes into each one but for Kelly, it’s his soul therapy.
Currently, Kelly said he is working on three mid-80s model custom-made Chevrolet extended cab trucks. According to Kelly, a limited number, about 2,500, were sent by GM to a shop in Dallas and they were converted from single cab to extended cab. Each truck bears the license plate “Rare85” or “Rare86” depending on the year model.
“I just love cars and trucks,” Kelly said. “This is what God gave us as a hobby. He knows we love it and he provides the means for us to do this.”
