After winning its first Dakar Rally on Saturday, Volkswagen may increase its motorsports involvement.
Kris Nissen, director of motorsports at VW, said the automaker may compete in the World Rally Championship very soon. “VW is one of the world’s biggest car manufacturers,” he said. “International competition is really important and sure, the Dakar is international competition, but so is the W.R.C.”
VW may also enter the IndyCar series in 2011. Currently, Honda is the only engine supplier in the series.
This news comes at a time when other manufacturers are cutting back on their motorsports programs. Honda exited Formula One, Subaru and Suzuki left the W.R.C.
