Milwaukee National Tour Produces Repeat Winners, Family Victories

More than 250 Soloists arrived at Miller Field, home of Major League Baseball’s Milwaukee Brewers, for the penultimate stop on the 2007 Tire Rack® SCCA Solo National Tour. As the season winds down, Soloists from across the central states and beyond were aiming to hit one out of the park before the rapidly approaching Solo Nationals.
With the hot and humid Wisconsin July making conditions a bit brutal, participants were able to grin and bare it thanks to some first-class Midwest hospitality by the Milwaukee Region. More challenging than the weather were the Steve Wyveen-designed courses that threw plenty of intense technical maneuvers at the competitors.
Wynveen himself came in second in the A Stock, the largest class of the event with 19 cars. That’s what he gets for sharing his MercuryRacing.com Honda S2000 with Jason Collett, of Knoxville, Tenn. Collett was slightly more nimble on the course, stopping the clocks 0.850-second ahead of Wynveen, from nearby Germantown.
Second in size to the A Stock brigade was D Stock, with 15 cars. Reigning D Stock SCCA Solo National Champion Bartek Borowski, of Elmwood Park, Ill., was fresh off a win at the Peru Tour and made it two D Stock wins in-a-row at Milwaukee behind the wheel of his Acura Integra. Borowski beat out JT Letkeman, from Steinbach, Manitoba, in the JMS Design Fusion/Pevac America Audi TT by 0.645-second.
Borowski wasn’t the only repeat winner in Milwaukee. Sam Strano, of Knowxdale, Pa., also took his second F Stock National Tour win in-a-row. Driving the Strano Performance/Capital Quest Mortgage Ford Shelby Mustang, Strano also earned an F Stock victory at the D. C. ProSolo in June.
It was three G Stock wins on the year for Craig Wilcox, of Blue Springs, Mo., behind the wheel of his QuickSilver/18Racing.com/Oasis Tan Mini Cooper S. While Andy Hollis, from Austin, Texas, remains undefeated in Street Touring S2 competition with his Soulspeed/ART/GRM Mazda Miata.
Danielle Engstrom, of Franfort, Ill., took her first Super Stock Ladies victory of the year. Engstrom piloted her Lotus Exige to the win by 9.563 seconds over the MonteloRacing.com Chevrolet Corvette of Laurie Montelo, from Schaumberg, Ill. Motelo’s sons cleaned up the two Formula Junior classes. Anthony and Joey Montelo went one-two in Formula Junior A, while Michael Montelo took Formula Junior B honors.
It was another family affair for Darrel Padberg and Desiree Padberg, of Muskego, Wis. The husband and wife team swept C Prepared and C Prepared Ladies in their Ford Mustang.
C Stock put on a good show between Timothy McIntosh Jr., of Berkley, Mich., and Dan Stone, of Sheridan, Ind. Both at the wheel of a Pontiac Solstice, McIntosh was the only driver in C Stock to break the 60-second mark, which helped propel him to a 0.093-second victory over Stone.
Closer still was Street Modified. Allen Kugler, of Springtown, Pa., wheeled his Fast Brakes/Redshift Motorsports Honda Civic to victory by only 0.052-second over the Showcase Mitsubishi Evo of Andy Lieber, from Bay City, Mich.
Taking home the Pace Hot Pursuit Awards were Mark Hirt, of Prospect Heights, Ill., and G. H. Sharp, of Kernersville, N.C. Driving a C Stock Mazda MX-5 in the local Index Class, Hirt had the most consistent run times on Saturday, while Sharp pulled the same feat on Sunday in his G Stock Mini Cooper S. Both drivers are now entered to win a Pace Hot Pursuit® trailer at the end of the season.
