David Reutimann failed to qualify for Sunday’s Nextel Cup event at Atlanta, so he soothed his feelings with his first Busch Series win.
Reutimann avoided trouble to capture the caution-filled Sam’s Town 250 at Memphis Motorsports Park on Saturday. The 37-year-old Toyota driver endured a green-white-checker finish for his first Busch Series victory in 63 starts. It also was owner Michael Waltrip’s first victory for the manufacturer.
“I was mad in general that I missed the (Atlanta) race,” Reutimann said. “It feels good to win here. The only thing that could make it better is to get on the plane and go back and run the Cup race. That’s not going to happen.” ESPN
25 caution flags, a red flag, parked drivers, penalties for rough driving, it was a grueling and frustrating day in Memphis. But, it was worth it to David Reutimann. After a race that fell just one flag shy of a record-tying 26 caution flags, Reutimann pulled into victory lane as the sun set at the Memphis Motorsports Park.
Even though most of them were under caution, Reutimann led a race high 194 laps of the extended 253-lap event. The race lasted three hours and two minutes and ended at just the right time. Reutimann celebrated in victory lane as darkness blanketed the track.
Reutimann’s win in the No. 99 Toyota was the second win of the season for the first year manufacturer. Jason Leffler was the first Toyota driver to visit victory lane earlier this season in Indianapolis. Reutimann finished third that day to Leffler. The Hotlap.com
