Stephen Leicht, driver of the No. 90 CitiFinancial Ford, was poised to post a career best NASCAR Busch Series finish during the running of Sunday’s Telcel-Motorola 200 before another car made contact with Leicht on the last lap, relegating him to a 27th-place finish.
With limited road course racing experience, Leicht showed no signs of inexperience during his Mexico City debut. After qualifying 13th, Leicht honed his road course racing skills and found himself in the top-10 for the majority of the 80-lap event in Mexico City. On the last turn of the final lap, while running sixth, another car collided with Leicht and sent him spinning. After Leicht restarted the car and returned to the field, he took the green-white-checkered in 27th.
“The CitiFinancial Ford was awesome today, †said Leicht. â€Cully (Barraclough) and the guys prepared a great car for me and I was able to be competitive all day. Unfortunately, I got caught up in someone else’s mess on the last lap and lost about 20 positions. I learned a lot this weekend and I am looking forward to our next road course event. â€
Juan Pablo Montoya took the lead with eight laps to go to win the Telcel-Motorola 200 on Sunday for his first NASCAR Busch Series victory. Denny Hamlin finished second, followed by Boris Said, Carl Edwards and Scott Pruett to complete the top-five.
The next event on the Busch Series schedule is the March 10 Sam’s Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
