Kevin Hamlin claimed his first career Busch Series top 10 on Saturday night, finishing seventh in the Busch Series 250. The run was long overdue for Hamlin after spending two, at times slow, seasons as a development driver for Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates.
During that time Hamlin has bounced back and forth between multiple rides in both Busch and Craftsman Truck Series competition. His run in Gateway was the 20th of his career yet only his fifth under the CGR banner in the No. 42 Texaco/Havoline Dodge.

Eric McClure: “Anyway, at the start of the race we had a really good car. Ronnie Griffin came on board to help us this week and he was a huge asset. My guys and he really worked well together and we made really methodical adjustments on the car all weekend and actually got the car pretty good. We moved up about 6 spots until about lap 25 when I started having brake troubles. We rode it out for awhile, but the front kept locking up and we became a wreck waiting to happen.” Eric McClure, CatchFence.com

However, so many new drivers are racing because of connections they have with family members who have raced in the NASCAR Cup series. They are handed keys to the race car with plenty of money to back their ambitions. There is Jeffrey Earnhardt, son of Kerry Earnhardt, Tyler Green who is Mark Green’s son, Ryan Blaney is son of Dave Blaney and Chrissy Wallace who is the daughter of Mike Wallace. I’m sure all the NASCAR fathers are proud of their children, but just because their children love racing, have access to money and connections, does not make them a good racer. RaceTrackladies.com

Now, that’s what a Busch series race is supposed to look like. Saturday night’s event at Gateway International Raceway across the Mississippi River from St. Louis featured the drivers who will likely be NASCAR’s future.
Reed Sorenson won the race that was a showcase for young talent because the usual cast of top level NASCAR drivers slumming in the series for practice took the weekend off along with the Nextel Cup series. Doug Guthrie, DetroitNews.com

“The car was real difficult to drive all day,” Edwards said. “I thought, ‘Well, we’re going to run fourth if I keep driving like this.’ So I started driving real hard, trying some different things, and I lost it going into” Turn “3. … I’m pretty happy to still finished sixth.” STEVE WALENTIK, ColumbiaTribune
