The ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts prides itself on grooming prospective future superstars as they travel down the road to Auto Racing stardom. Two alumni of the ASALMS proved that point last weekend!
On Saturday June 16, 2007 at the Kentucky (KY) Speedway during the NASCAR Busch Series event, the Meijer 300 Presented by Oreo, 2005 ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division Champion, Stephen Leicht won his first career NASCAR Busch Series Feature after taking the lead from Rookie Brad Coleman on Lap 188 of the 200-lap Feature.
Leicht would then pull away from the rest of the field and go on to win his first career NASCAR Busch Series Feature in his 38th career series start driving the #90 CitiFinancial/Robert Yates Racing/Ford Fusion. Coleman finished second ahead of Scott Wimmer, NASCAR Nextel Cup Regular, David Stremme, and JR Motorsports driver, Shane Huffman were the Top Five.
Leicht became the first full-time NASCAR Busch Series Driver and non NASCAR Nextel Cup regular to win a NASCAR Busch Series event during the 2007 season. Snapping the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series’ string of 15 consecutive events since the start of the season.
In the same event, 2006 ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division Champion and Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year, Kelly Bires finished a career high Seventh in only his second ever NASCAR Busch Series start!
