I am delighted to score our first points for the year, not only for my own personal reasons, but also for the team. With the new points score system this year, scoring points can be really difficult, so to reward the guys in the team with some points is really great. On a personal note, it sort of gets that monkey off my back and we can move forward.
That said, we could have scored so many more than the eight that we did. On Friday, I was effectively leading the race before Dean Canto turned me around. The damage caused to my car eventually meaning that I had to retire. To be so close to a race win and to be forced out was incredibly frustrating, but it does prove one thing, and that is that we are improving. We had great car speed in the wet conditions and excellent strategy which elevated us from 19th on the grid, to the front.
The first race on Saturday was also my hardest for quite some time, the inclement weather, mixed with a windscreen that was completely fogged up, meant that the first five laps were incredibly difficult.
On Sunday, we were able to fight our way back up to 10th position, passing 19 cars in the process, again outlining our potential on the day. For the third race, we were comfortably running in eighth position, and the team really helped me along with a cracker pit stop. Unfortunately, along with several other cars, I slipped off the road on some mud or water that had been dragged onto the circuit at turn 12 and I slid down the order to 20th. It was great that our dry car speed matched that of our speed in the wet.
In all, we can draw a lot of positives from the weekend and I am really looking forward to the next event at Eastern Creek in Sydney, where I am sure we can carry over our good speed from Winton.
