IndyCar Series drivers have a problem passing on the larger oval tracks, including Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the person in charge of competition said it will be corrected.
“Sooner rather than later,” said Brian Barnhart, the IndyCar Series’ president of competition.
Barnhart’s goal is to have changes in place for the Aug.1 race at Kentucky Speedway. That’s the next 11/2-mile track on the schedule.
The situation was particularly glaring June 6 at Texas Motor Speedway when Briscoe jumped to an 11-second lead, lost the lead to Helio Castroneves during a pit stop, and couldn’t get around him afterward.
Among the areas being considered for change: a reduction in the minimum rear wing angle and its attached wicker, and the allowance of such things as tire ramps, sidepod extensions and wheel end fills.

None of the changes should require additional costs because they’ve been used in the past and are known quantities.
One adjustment Barnhart won’t make now—it will be considered for 2010, he said—is a pit assignment procedure change.
