Sam Hornish Jr. insisted he has not made a decision regarding a move to NASCAR in 2008, although many in the IndyCar Series expect him to go.
The 2006 Indianapolis 500 winner all but guaranteed a return to Indy-car racing in some form. That statement was likely driven by the fact team owner Roger Penske wants Hornish to participate in next year’s 500, no matter what. CURT CAVIN, AutoWeek
“The NASCAR scene caught my eye. I was a real big fan of Dale Earnhardt Sr. I had IndyCar drivers that I was a big fan of like Rick Mears, Danny Sullivan, Al Unser Jr. For whatever reason, when I started watching NASCAR, Dale Sr. was always my favorite driver because people either loved him or hated him. I loved that aspect of it. That was something that interested me.”
The Hornish-to-NASCAR rumors have been around for a long time, even long before he signed with Penske. It was believed that Pennzoil, his one-time IRL sponsor, wanted him in the No. 1 Cup car, which the company also sponsored. That would have made Hornish and Dale Earnhardt Jr. teammates. Hornish departing would also be a devastating blow to a series in need of developing star power, but it won’t be a big surprise. Hornish has run six Busch races this season for Penske Racing, his IndyCar team, and will make his Cup debut next week at New Hampshire. SportsIllustrated
