Both NASCAR and IndyCar Series' Awaiting Payment From Milwaukee Promoter

Like NASCAR, the Indy Racing League is still seeking all of its money from the promoter of the recent race in Milwaukee.

IRL officials would not discuss details, but Terry Angstadt, the president of the commercial division, confirmed it’s an issue his staff is “working through.”

The IRL raced at Wisconsin State Fair Park on May 30-31.

“We’re working on a (payment) plan; I think that’s the best way to put it,” Angstadt said Saturday prior to the IndyCar Series race at Richmond International Raceway.

Sanctioning fees vary by event, but the average figure for an IndyCar Series race is $1 million.

NASCAR said earlier in the week that the same promoter, Wisconsin Motorsports, had not made a full payment for the Nationwide and Camping World Truck races held June 20 at the Milwaukee Mile.

A spokesman for Wisconsin Motorsports said Saturday that the organization would have “no additional comment at this time.” The group’s president, Claude Napier, could not be reached. Indianapolis Star

Indy Racing League spokesman John Griffin declined to comment late Friday on whether his sanctioning body had been paid in full yet for the ABC Supply/A.J. Foyt 225 IndyCar weekend at the Mile in May. IRL teams are paid quarterly by the league.

The IRL intends to announce in late July an 18-race schedule for the 2010 IndyCar Series season. Terry Angstadt, the president of the league’s commercial division, told last week that Milwaukee’s future with the series was in doubt because of questions about the promoter.

Napier blamed the losses on advance ticket sales for the races made last year by Milwaukee Mile Holdings LLC, the previous race promoter. He also said NASCAR’s decision to cut testing at racetracks would cost Wisconsin Motorsports much-needed revenue.

“Wisconsin Motorsports didn’t get the benefit of any of that, although we agreed to honor the tickets,” Napier said of the advance ticket sales last year. “It definitely made things fall a little short.” Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
