Australia’s Ryan Briscoe has reclaimed the lead in the IndyCar Championship after finishing second in the Grand Prix of Somona in California.
Briscoe came in behind Scotland’s Dario Franchitti and now leads him in the standings by four points.
Franchitti went wire-to-wire at the Infineon Raceway after starting on pole, managing to avert an opening-lap seven car smash to win the final road course event of the season. BigPond News
After a lap 71 re-start Franchitti managed to hold off Briscoe’s Penske car and cling on to the flag.
“I got a good view of Dario’s rear wing there today,” Briscoe said. “That was pretty much the story of my race.
“We were fairly conservative on fuel during that first stint and I actually thought we were going to be able to get him by going a lap further.
“I was surprised to see that he went a lap further than me. I think if we would have had clean air we would have been quicker than him.
“Unfortunately, it is a really tough track to pass on if the guy in front of you doesn’t make mistakes.
“I dont think that Dario made a single one today, so congratulations to him and his team.
“Team Penske did an awesome job, we had the quickest stops of anyone. It’s great to be leading the championship heading into Chicago,” Briscoe said. Sydney Morning Herald
