Some twenty-seven driver and car combinations hit the famed two and a half mile oval at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Tuesday with the opening day of practice for the 91st running of the Indianapolis 500, set for Sunday, May 27.
Earlier in the day the Dreyer & Reinbold Racing team announced the partnership with Rick Weidinger and A1 TEAM USA as a co-entrant for the No. 15 Honda-powered car and 2004 Indy 500 Champion Buddy Rice. The No. 15 machine will be known throughout the month as the A1 TEAM USA/Dreyer & Reinbold Honda Dallara.
Rice, the 31-year-old veteran driver from Phoenix, was one of the first drivers on the track Tuesday when the prestigious racing surface was opened for practice. Rice, a three-time winner on the IndyCar Series, recorded a top lap of 222.525 miles per hour for the 13th best speed of the day.
